We will never forget Violeta’s rescue.
She lived in a herd of 30 horses and was heavily pregnant when we went to collect them. We tried to explain to her that we wanted to take her to our animal shelter, a paradise for horses.
However, desperate to protect her baby and fearful of humans, she was reluctant to load into the lorry that would take her to her new life. It was a very tense time, some of us cried out of helplessness. And then, all of a sudden it was as if everything had become clear and Violeta calmly loaded.
Doing this work, we often find ourselves in surprising situations that confirm just how sensitive animals are. When we started this project, we were quite worried about how they would react when they arrived at our sanctuary, i.e. would they be violent?
However, right away we discovered that it would not be as hard as we had imagined. Horses are stressed while they are still in the places they have been abused, as well as during the journey to our animal shelter. Yet when they arrive here, they seem to understand that this is a happy place.
Perhaps their new companions let them know somehow that they no longer need to be afraid, that they are finally safe.
