It is hard to say which is the worst case of abuse we have ever seen, but Lupita’s is certainly one of them.
According to several witnesses, she was beaten practically from the moment she was born.
For several years, nobody said a word. Eventually, after yet another beating, the neighbours called a vet and reported the situation.
The vet was certain that if this mare was going to have any chance of surviving, she needed to be at our animal shelter.
And survive she would. I am not sure that people realise just how difficult and dangerous our work can be here. The daily treatment we had to give Lupita was highly risky for our staff. But we managed it.
She made a full recovery from her physical injuries but not from her psychological ones. She knows who we are and that we would never hurt her but, simply put, she does not like humans. And we have learned to respect this.
Nevertheless, she does love carrots (who doesn’t?) and she would be delighted for you to come and visit her… As long as you bring a big bag of them!
