Loquillo (formerly known as Enfadado) was rescued from the House of Horrors, along with the companions who managed to survive. He was adopted by one of our veteran volunteers. During the years he stayed with him, we believe they had a great time together. They both learned Natural Horsemanship exercises together.
On several occasions, we offered our help to the volunteer to pay for certain veterinary care that Enfadado required. To keep them from being separated, we offered to help with whatever the horse might need. Unfortunately, the gentleman, who has known us for years, must have felt embarrassed and instead of coming to the Refuge to talk to us, he wrote us a message through another volunteer threatening to leave the horse (his horse, his friend!) tied outside the fence of our Center.
Loquillo missed his friend, but he was a horse with an optimistic temperament, recognized us as his rescuers, and was generally as happy as a lark. He didn’t even seem to mind that his “daddy,” who explained to us that he was too old to take care of him, hadn’t told us to come see him and give him carrots. But it has happened to all of us at some point… it’s a common ailment: ungrateful friends.
We changed his name to Loquillo. We did it to erase the past, as only the Present existed in the sanctuary, happy with his companions.
It had been like that for a long time until he passed away in January 2025, already elderly and still playing, becoming part of our garden of friends whom we never forget.
